Non Verbal Communication – 93% effective
Communication without words plays an very important role in communication. It is surprising that the words you are delivering is not as much effective, it is the non verbal communication which makes your communication more effective. For example eye contact, Your tone (loud , low , polite). It is 93% effective in your communincation, Verbal communication play – 7% role, Movement, Gestures -55% , Voice tone , inflection – 38%
Lets categorized it :-
1) Kinesics or body language – It is very important that all our body movements, postures and gestures are guided by our thought process or emotions.
Examples are – nodding our head, Shrugging our shoulders, eyes blinking etc. Kinesics includes
a) Facial Expression – While dealing with client why it has been said face to face communication so more effective ?
b) Eye Contact – It indicates liking, Trust, Respect, Careful Listeninng
c) Gestures – Physical movement of our arms, legs, shoulders and head.
d) Appearence – Best example is our clothes. As popular saying “Clothes define the standard of a man”.
2) Paralanguage – Without it words don’t convey their meaning. For example , when you are angry same set of words you say loudly or harshly and it convey different prespective to your words. Paralanguage includes :-
a) Variation in pitch – Example, Your friend who is usually bubbly and enthusiastic over the phone, talks to you in a low voice. It is then obvious that something is wrong.
b) Speed in speaking – for example, A rapid, fast speech pattern is associated with anxiety and lack of confidence. It also consistently ranks as one of the top most annoying speech patterns out there.
c) Pause – The pause serves to punctuate what the speaker has said. Pauses cannot be too long or too frequent or else they may suggest that there has been a blank space, or a lapse in your thinking.
d) Volume variation – Example, When one is feeling angry or irritated they generally speaks in very loud volume.
3) Proxemics – It is the space language. For example while communicating with your partner if the space is maintained around 18 inches, the communication will be more effective. Proxemics includes
a) Intimate zone – Physical contact to 18 inches – example spouse
b) Personal Zone – 18 inches to 4 feet – example friends
c) Social zone – 4 to 12 feet – example society
d) Public zone – 12 feet to as far as one can hear – example politcal speeches
4) Sign language – Visual aur audio elements – Examples are – Traffic Signlas , Signs of electric danger, Signs of telephone booth.
